- Depression
Hollowed out over resection of fat can lead to depressed area and contour irregularity
|
| |
- Wave
If the cannula is too close to the skin and fat is removed a wavy appearance to the contour is apparent
|
| |
- Divot
A smaller area of depression many times seen at the port site where the liposuction cannula is introduced into the skin or another area of over resection
|
| |
- Asymmetry
In areas of bilateral liposuction one side is not even in size or contour to the opposite side
» Under Resection - Fatty volume is not fully aspirated from the target area or part within.
» Lumps - refers to under resection of fat within an aesthetic area
|
| |
- Burn
» Most common in Ultrasonic Liposuction. The tip of the cannula can become dangerously hot and if the surgeon does not stay oriented he or she may impact the undersurface of the skin
causing a full thickness (3 rd degree) burn
» Should be totally avoidable
» Very difficult to fix

Gluteal Crease
There are areas of the body that the liposuction surgeon must not violate. Disruption of the attachment of the skin to the underlying fascia causes the tissues to fall. These areas include the gluteal crease, lateral gluteal depression, middle medial thigh, inferolateral iliotibial tract, and distal posterior thigh. |

Realistic Goals Once you have had a complication of the contour after liposuction a frank discussion between you and your surgeon must take place. A plan for correction as well as the reality of secondary results must be addressed. It should make sense that the more minor the deformity the better the secondary result should be. Small divots, minimal waviness, and minimal lumps all do well with secondary procedures.

Off The Shelf Products
Increasing research is being done on off the shelf products for divot correction. In general the problem with such techniques is the lack of longevity of the product. Even a longer lasting products such as Scuplta has a longevity of 2 years. Long term studies on a large patient population need to be published in peer reviewed journals for widespread acceptance to be accomplished. Products such as Restylane, Captique, and Collagen do not offer long term correction and would be prohibitively expensive in the volume necessary.
There are many physicians out there that claim to be proficient at liposuction. With marketing hyperbole and board certifications from unrecognized accreditors aside, you can determine the qualification of your doctor by this gauge. Ask for proof that he or she has privileges to perform the procedure that they are offering you in their office in a hospital. One of the scary facts in New York is that if you are a physician - no one can stop you from doing procedures in your office that you feel you are qualified to do. Until of course someone gets hurt.
